In 1975 Dick Thomas founded his part-time landscaping business. He enjoyed the work and in 1980 incorporated and became a full-time business As a new business he sought out a few larger accounts to help build recognition and respect in the community. Referrals from those jobs and the pursuit of others helped his business grow. Dick attributes his success to working hard, offering quality service, paying attention to detail and building a good name and image. Dick personally does all the estimates, is there for the start of a job and closes a job with his inspection and approval. He feels to continue in business today one must strive to master quality and exceed standards. Thomas Landscaping vehicles are kept neat and clean, giving a respectable appearance and displaying the pride and integrity upon which his company is built. He is grateful for the confirmations he receives by repeat business and referrals. He is easily accessible to contractors. Dick feels that is another factor in his success. "Contractors need to find you with ease and know you are reliable," Dick said. In the winter months Dick and his staff attend seminars which help them keep up with the ever changing trends and materials. They learn about new shrubs or new design techniques and materials. In 1993 Thomas Landscape was commissioned by the Chamber to design a maintenance-free planting that greets visitors on Route 104 near the Irondequoit Bay bridge. He filled the hillside with tons of colored stone and added a sailboat and sun. It was redesigned in 1998 and again just recently, changing the style of boat and and adding bright blue permamulch for the water. Outside of the business, Dick feels it is important to give back to the community in which he lives. He has been with the West Webster Fire Department for the past 27 years, serving two terms as President and two terms on the Board of Directors. Thomas Landscaping is supporter of local events, sports, theater and his daughters in dance. Dick has served on the Parent Committee for his daughter's schools. From time to time he goes into Webster schools to teach children about the importance of trees and landscaping. He's passed out seeds, getting the children started on their own planting experience. Thomas Landscape can be reached at 585-671-8476. Congratulations! -- Return to Business of the Month Listing --
