It’s been seven months, almost to the day, since New York began to shut down schools and businesses, limit gatherings and faith communities, and making COVID-19 the headlines in every media outlet every day.
We finished Spring, moved through Summer, and now we’re in Fall and there are frost warnings in the news. Some businesses have permanently closed, some are hanging on by a thread, and some are thriving. Every business and every person has made changes, some simple enough, some painful and ongoing, some easy to understand, some inexplicable. The one guaranteed element in our lives today is that the future has limited predictability and the immutable constant is that things will change – yet again.
Never has there been a time when we need to “stay focused on the moment”, “keep it in today”, and deal with things “as best as we can”.
The Chamber continues to move through time, accounting for the current needs of our members, along with their fears, the government rules, and restrictions, and loosely planning into the future, recognizing (and anticipating) that each day may bring changes that alter all of those things.
We had our September breakfast at the Columbus Center and we elected directors and officers for the new membership year. Congratulations to Diane McClure who is moving into the position of Chair of the Board, to Carolyn Montanaro moving into the Chair-elect position, and to the elected directors (for three-year terms): Ken Dens, Karen Szembrot, and Russ Ziskind. Many thanks to Dawn Sargent who becomes our Immediate Past Chair of the Board and much gratitude to Joe Vitello who is moving off the Board, completing his term as Immediate Past Chair. Our Chamber would not be the great organization it is if not for the efforts, passion, and service of the volunteer members who serve on our committee and on the Board of Directors.
We will be recognizing our outgoing Board members during “Pass the Gavel” at the October Breakfast. Please plan to join us at the Columbus Center.
The are several items in the newsletter that you should review, including events being held at the Webster Parks & Recreations Center and at Chamber member Dairy Queen for Halloween.
Lastly, open enrollment has begun for Medicare Plans (October 15th to December 7th) and will begin for individual and small business plans that renew in January starting in November and going until December 15th. While it’s likely the NYS deadline may get extended, we recommend that you take care of renewal in open enrollment to ensure that your new plan is in place by January 1st (The Medicare deadline is NOT likely to be extended).
As always, take deep breathes, stay in the moment, and try to be nice.
