Barry's Column

We are only a few days away from St. Patrick’s Day and few more get us to Spring. We already sprang ahead with the clocks (for what good reason, I don’t know) and the temperature is starting to feel more like Spring.

The dormant starts to come alive again and people get a little spring in their step – maybe it’s anticipation for our six weeks of summer! Since it’s the season of renewal, maybe it’s a good time to look at the progress of the year so far and make any adjustments. Along the lines of spring cleaning, I am looking to clean out a few closets and donate what I no longer need (or want).

We have a lot of great things coming up including an evening Eat, Drink and Connect, the monthly breakfast, and our Power Hour series. It’s all here in the newsletter, please take a minute to scroll through it so you don’t miss anything.

Speaking of the newsletter, I want to remind you that your business can place a promotional flyer in the newsletter – scroll down to see the flyers from Henderson Ford, ESL, and the Bay View Family YMCA. You can also put the flyer in your directory listing – click here to see how Henderson Ford did it.

Did you promote the Chamber this month with a friend or a colleague? Don’t forget that you get a “signing bonus” when you get a member to join the Chamber – click here for details.

Lastly, I would like to make a comment on several articles I have seen lately regarding income taxes. Last month we had a great Power Hour by Garrett Wagner that told us about the impact of the new tax laws and it was hugely informative. I have noticed that people continue to mistakenly refer to the refund/payment amount as a measure of the impact the tax law changes had on them. The true comparison is the amount of tax you paid compared to your adjusted gross income. It’s called the effective tax rate and it is very easy to compare from one year to the next. Ask your tax preparer to tell you what your effective tax rate is for 2018 compared to 2017. That will give a true picture of the impact of the tax law changes.

Breakfast is Friday the 29th at the Columbus Center – we have a fun and informative program planned to be followed on April 5th with Power Hour with a more in-depth look at the topic.

GreenSpark Solar started in 2002 as Sustainable Energy Developments and is located at  318 Timothy Lane, Ontario, New York 14519 with business owner  Meag Schulte, handling the PR and Marketing end of the business.

GreenSpark has created a mission statement with the following beliefs:

·         To create fiercely local, cost-effective, clean energy options in the Greater Rochester Community.

·         To believe that locally generated clean energy is a cost-effective, market-based solution to combat climate change and an important strategy to strengthen our local community.

Keeping the mission statement in mind they provide,

·         A solar powered charging station that they bring to events and provide an opportunity for attendees to charge devices.

·         They deliver educational presentations about Exploring Solar, at which they inform the public about incentives and policies that encourage solar.

·         They host community events, with various partners, to advance environmental initiatives.

·         They also offer tours of their facility to educate the community about the Wayne Industrial Sustainability Park and the Sustainable Micro-grid on which their office is located.

·         One of their local projects was to implement the Webster Solar Challenge to encourage businesses and homeowners to Go Solar.

They currently have 30 employees ranging from sales to installers to friendly office staff to answer any solar questions customers may have.

GreenSpark has been busy in the community providing partnerships with not-for-profits to host events that generate donations, per household that Goes Solar. They keep the giving back spirit alive by volunteering at local charities, such as Gilda's Club. They also keep educating youth at school events to teach them how solar works and what they can do to save energy.

Congratulations to GreenSpark Solar, March 2019’s Business of the Month!
