Barry's Column

I am torn today between writing a column about COVID-19 or just ignoring it. Because it now seems to permeate every aspect of our lives, which includes the Webster Chamber of Commerce, I guess I need to comment.

The first confirmed case of COVID-19 in Monroe County has now been announced. According to health officials, it was never a matter of if, but when.

So far, the best information I have heard came from Monroe County Health Director, Dr. Mendoza, when he said we should remain calm and try to deal in facts and not fear.

The COVID-19 is not unlike much of the other viruses we deal with all the time and that are especially prevalent during flu season. The symptoms are much like a mild flu for most people and more seriously (especially for the immune-compromised and our elderly) a mild to severe pneumonia. The unknown (and extremely difficult to measure in the early stages of any outbreak) is how rapidly this virus might spread. As I write this, about 1400 people in the US have tested positive and about 48 deaths have been attributed to complications from the COVID-19 virus. The vast majority of those testing positive have very mild symptoms. The vast majority of the deaths have come from a single nursing home population of elderly and otherwise compromised individuals.

To put that in perspective, 35+ million people in the US contract the flu during flu season (October 1st to April 30th) each year and nearly 20,000 die from the complications from the flu viruses each flu season. (and as an aside, 16 people in Monroe County died of opioid overdoses in the month of February).

The Federal and State governments, along with the County of Monroe, have issued advice and directives in efforts to contain the virus, protect the most vulnerable, and treat the sick.

The Webster Chamber of Commerce will evaluate all advice given by health and government officials and will comply with all directives. We will particularly review advice and directives as they are provided regarding the gathering of people (such as a Chamber event or a Chamber breakfast).

Currently, the Chamber event schedule remains in place.  In the event that the Chamber decides to alter our scheduled events, we will do a specific email blast to all scheduled attendees and to the membership as a whole. We will also post changes on the home page of the Webster Chamber website and on our Facebook page.

The best course of action for us all is to wash our hands, cover our mouths, and, if you become ill, call your health care provider (do not travel there – stay home and call) for guidance and evaluation.

Like many things our community has dealt with in the past, we will work through this latest situation and it will eventually be behind us.

Lastly, let’s follow Dr. Mendoza’s advice: remain calm and deal with facts and not fear.
