Barry's Column

Happy New Year! We made it through another holiday season and we can start the countdown to Spring!

We are in a little bit of a catch-up mode this month with the newsletter, so hopefully, you made it to the Eat, Drink, and Connect on the 14th at Lala’s in the Village – it was an amazing gathering in her beautiful shop with some great food – we even had some birthday cake! The January Breakfast is on the 31st where we will recognize the 2020 Business Person of the Year and hear from Judge David Corretore about the NYS bail reform laws and their effect on our community.

And a couple of reminders to update your listing on the Chamber’s website directory to make sure the information is accurate and links are still good (both will help with search engine results) Also, don’t forget that we are still in the medical insurance open enrollment period (the one time of year you can change medical insurance with no “qualifying event”) but that window closes on the 31st of January.

It seems like I should come up with some wonderful words of wisdom for the New Year: possibly something to inspire you to make changes in your life or business; possibly something to give you a new fresh perspective on the world; possibly something to help restore your faith in mankind and humanity. I am not sure that any words from me (or anyone else for that matter) have the power to do any of those things. I’m not even sure anyone reads these columns! I do believe that old adage that change has to come from within.

I read that only eight percent of people keep their new year’s resolutions – I would be in the 92 percentile. It’s possible that’s why I pretty much don’t bother anymore with a list. So, I have only come up with one “thing I want to try to do” (I’m not even calling it a resolution). I am just going to try to do a little better today than I did yesterday, a little better this week than last week, and so on. There are so many places in my life that have room for some improvement. Some places need lots of improvement, some just a notch or two, but improvement just the same. Perfection isn’t the goal; I’m just hoping for some progress.

Lastly, thank you for all of your support of the Chamber in 2019. Thank you for your participation in events, your committee work, your financial support, your input, and your constructive criticism – I am grateful to you all and wish you all the best in the new year!
