Barry's Column

I want to talk a little bit about first impressions and reaching out to members and to potential members of the Chamber of Commerce.

Our monthly breakfast meeting has the largest attendance of our events and often they are the first impression someone has of the Chamber. When a new member or a guest is at a Chamber event for the 1st few times, it can be intimidating. Walking into a room with 90-100 people you have never met can be a little daunting. Think back to your first Chamber events.

They may be visitors, guests, new members, or 1st time attendees at a breakfast. To help you recognize those categories, we prepare color-coded badges for each of them:

Guests are potential new Chamber members that have been invited to a complimentary breakfast so they can see what a breakfast is all about – they have a Blue badge on. (Speaking of guests, if you invite someone to come to breakfast, please make sure you are also attending).

Visitors are people attending breakfast but are not a potential Chamber member. They may family of someone receiving an honor or award or someone that has come to hear a program or is in from out of town. They will have a Green badge.

First-time attendees come from a Chamber member that has been a member business for a while, but this person is new to the Chamber events. Maybe they have moved into a new job or a new responsibility. They will have a Yellow badge.

New members are just that. They recently joined the Chamber and this is their 1st few times at a breakfast or event. They have a ribbon on their badge that says ”New Member”.

We helped a little with the color-coded badges, now we need you to help a little. If you see someone that has a colored badge, please reach out, introduce yourself – make them feel welcome. Show them where the coffee is, ask them to sit with you at the table, ask them what they do and tell them we are the best Chamber in the world!

One more visual for you to step into action: If you see someone, anyone, standing alone at a Chamber event, that’s your cue to go over and greet them, talk to them and ask them how they are doing. Each of us is an ambassador of the Webster Chamber – each of us plays a part it that person’s first impression of us. What are you doing to make their first impression a welcoming inclusive awesome impression?

Lastly, I want to mention potential new members. If, in your travels, you run across a new business in our Chamber footprint, call the Chamber office and let us know about this new business. We will (or have one of our membership committee members) reach out to them about the opportunities and benefits of Chamber membership. There is no source of new business information, so we need you to be our eyes and ears.

See you all at breakfast on the 25th!

Domino's Pizza located at 1075 Ridge Road in Webster has been keeping people coming back for tasty treats for over 2 1/2 years and was the first new Domino's in Monroe County in over a decade.  Owned by Allan Erwin and managed by John Adams, their mission statement is to be the #1 pizza store in the neighborhood so they can create opportunities for their team.

They have been busy in our community by supporting Webster Drug Free Community Coalition and handed out over $1,000 in free twists.  Local Boy Scout troops have been gifted with Domino's Pizza as well as a charity party for Robyn Whittaker's close friend Walt Dorfner that contributed to the Cancer Society.  Many PTSA folks have also enjoyed the generosity of Domino's along with discount programs for schools wanting to provide pizza for their students.

Congratulations to Domino's Pizza as Webster Chamber's September 2019 Business of the Month!

New York State Law Change

Attention all Employers:

As part of the Governor’s Budget, passed by the legislature and signed by the Governor and effective immediately, employers are required to allow employees time off, with pay, to vote in any public election. Additionally, employers are required to post that information conspicuously where employees will see it.

The NYS Board of Elections has provided a “poster/notice” for you to use that meets the requirements of the law. I have attached that to this email and provided you with a link here:  https://www.elections.ny.gov/NYSBOE/elections/AttentionEmployees.pdf

The attached/linked PDF provides the actual law on page one and the “poster/notice” on page two. Please read them both and note that this notice to employees is to be posted at least 10 workdays before each election and remain up until the polls close for that election. THE NEXT PUBLIC ELECTION IN NYS IS THE PRIMARIES TO BE HELD ON JUNE 25TH, SO THIS NOTICE NEEDS TO BE POSTED TODAY.
