Barry's Column

A lot has happened in the last year or so. I don’t have to be specific but when you think about a few, such as the pandemic impact on our physical health and the healthcare system, how we work (if we work), how we education children, etc., and beyond the pandemic there was a presidential election, a change to single party congressional control, calls for police reform, social media oversight and content control, school board elections, protests and calls for racial equality, plus there's been some weird weather.

My point is that a lot has happened in the last year or so. Along with those events, came some other things too: anxiety, fear, depression, loneliness, stress, isolation, emotional upheaval, disconnection, behavioral coping changes, anger, frustration, and impatience, to name a few.

I think, without exception, that the mental health of every one of us has been impacted (for some, a significant impact) as a result. The “mental” aspect of our health is often not a focus and is often neglected, Many don’t realize that mental health issues often spill over becoming ailments affecting our bodies physically.

Business owners and operators have a “normal” high level of stress and anxiety with too much to do and too little time in which to do it.

I just wanted to encourage each of us to look at this aspect of our wellbeing. Pause, reflect, take a deep breath, and evaluate all the outside influences that are impacting your inside wellness. Put labels on the feelings. Remember that it’s natural to feel all the things we are feeling – it’s happening to all of us.

How are you coping with these feelings in your life? Some coping mechanisms are healthier than others. Which might you be turning to? Exercise, meditation, walking, talk therapy and medication might be better than over-drinking, yelling and screaming, smoking, using, gambling, or shutting down and isolating from the world.

Some things we can work through by ourselves or with a significant-other or friend. Sometimes we need to reach out to professionals to help us navigate through the rough road and potholes.

My point is that a lot has happened in the last year or so. Are you taking care of the “whole” you – physical and mental?

New York State and the federal government have once again extended health insurance enrollment. This extension is now throughout 2021. Those now enrolling for health insurance can do so by the 15th of any calendar month, to begin coverage as of the first day of the following month.

The Webster Chamber of Commerce has been enrolling individuals, families, businesses, and sole proprietors in health insurance since 1938. The licensed and certified Chamber staff is able to process insurance enrollment with all the local health insurance carriers and the NY State of Health Marketplace (Medicaid, Essential Plans, Child Health Plus, premium tax credits). The Chamber can also process enrollment in Medicare Advantage, Medigap, and Part D plans for those that qualify.
